Playboy Magazine once dubbed Colfax Avenue the “Wickedest Street in America.” While that may be up for debate, Colfax is definitely filled with character. The longest continuous street in the country, it’s packed with colorful personalities, eclectic businesses, and wild nights you might or might not remember.
The History of Colfax
Colfax’s history is as lively as its array of tattoo parlors. An ancient 'trail,' its origins date back to Colorado’s Gold Rush in the 19th century. Originally a dirt road connecting the foothills, it was often traveled by miners and earned various nicknames, including “The Golden Road” and “The Gateway to the Rockies.”
Initially considered an essential part of Golden’s infrastructure, the street turned east and became a key route in Denver and Aurora, eventually expanding with the cities (today, the avenue ends in Strasburg).
In 1868, the street was officially deemed “Colfax” in honor of Schuyler Colfax, a politician from Indiana, Ulysses S. Grant’s future vice president, and a man who would prove instrumental in ushering Colorado into statehood.
Route 40
After the Gold Rush, Colfax became an important part of Route 40, a highway that, at its peak, stretched coast to coast from San Francisco to Atlantic City. During this golden era, Colfax was lively, well-known, and visited by everyone from musicians to tourists to wheelers and dealers.
The emergence of Interstate 70 diminished Colfax’s prominence as a key route; the avenue was no longer the travel hub it once was, and the area experienced a sharp decline. Condemned buildings, drug activity, and prostitution cast a shadow over the upscale hotels and famous landmarks. This reputation persisted through Colfax's rebirth, but instead of deterring visitors, the mystique, danger, and excitement only enhanced the avenue’s allure.
Colfax, Reimagined
Today, Colfax is the most famous street in Colorado, with a lore that extends far beyond the state's borders. While it remains one continuous street, it often feels like several different avenues, each with its own vibe and stories to tell.
